Quick answer: in Los Angeles, English classes for adults are free through LAUSD’s Division of Adult and Career Education, which says its classes are tuition-free, and through the noncredit programmes of the Los Angeles Community College District. The Alliance Française de Los Angeles charges $475 for 24 hours of French, and UCLA Extension’s online Elementary Spanish costs $788. How public language classes work in Los Angeles
Los Angeles has two public adult education systems. The Los Angeles Unified School District runs the Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE), with adult schools and centres across the city teaching English, high school diploma courses and career training. DACE’s own site says plainly that its classes are tuition-free. Other costs can apply, so ask the school when you register.
The Los Angeles Community College District runs noncredit adult education at its colleges. Los Angeles City College, in East Hollywood, says its Noncredit ESL Program offers free English classes, with no course fees or book fees, focused on English for life and work. Noncredit courses do not count towards a degree, but they are a quick way in. Credit language courses, such as Spanish or French for transfer, are charged at community college tuition rates.
What this means in practice: if your goal is English, you should not need to pay tuition in Los Angeles. If your goal is another language, expect to pay a cultural institute, UCLA Extension or a private school.

How to choose a language course in Los Angeles
No US state licenses leisure language teachers, so compare providers on what they publish and what they will put in writing:
- Level and outcome. Ask which CEFR level (or the provider’s own level) the course starts and finishes at, and how many teaching hours that takes. Our guide to CEFR levels from A1 to C2 explains the scale most institutes use.
- Price per hour, not per course. Sessions in the sources below run from 4 to 12 weeks and from 1 to 3 hours a class, so divide the fee by the teaching hours before comparing.
- What is extra. Books, registration fees and membership are often charged separately from tuition.
- Eligibility for free classes. Publicly funded adult education usually has age, residency or documentation rules, so ask what to bring before you go.
- Refunds and transfers. Ask for the refund policy in writing before you pay; most institutes only refund before the first or second class.
- Student visas. Many English schools on Wilshire Boulevard teach international students; if you need an I-20, ask whether the school is SEVP-certified before paying.
