Request a free quoteThere are two price systems in the US. Publicly funded adult education, run by school districts, community colleges and libraries with state and federal money, is mostly free, but it concentrates on English, high school equivalency and job skills. Foreign language classes for leisure, such as French, Spanish, German or Japanese, are sold by cultural institutes, university extension programmes, private schools and tutors at their own prices. The table shows both. Every figure comes from a named source, checked in September 2026. Where we could not find a published price, we have left the item out rather than guess.

The cheapest route to English is almost always public adult education: our explainer on adult English classes and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act covers who these programmes serve. For other languages, a cultural institute course works out at roughly $17–$31 an hour in our sources: $620 for 30 hours at the Instituto Cervantes New York is about $21 an hour, and $500 for about 16 hours at the Alliance Française de Chicago is about $31. Private tutors can be cheaper online but cost more in person.
What drives the price
Who funds the course. English classes for adults are funded by federal and state adult education money, which is why LAUSD’s Division of Adult and Career Education and the NYC Department of Education can offer them tuition-free. The same funding rarely covers French or Japanese for leisure.
Where you live. Residency changes the fee. CUNY’s CLIP charges New York State residents $180 a semester and others $450; Houston City College charges $84.50 per semester hour in district and $180.50 out of district for credit courses; City Colleges of Chicago’s free ESL requires you to live in Illinois.
Membership. Cultural institutes often discount members: the Alliance Française de Chicago charges members $455 and non-members $500 for an 8-week class, and Japan Society members pay $310 rather than $360.
Time of day. Instituto Cervantes Chicago charges $500 for afternoon courses starting between 2pm and 5pm, against $590 in the morning or evening.
Extras to budget for
- Books. Instituto Cervantes Chicago says books are compulsory for each course; LaGuardia and GateWay also exclude books from the fee.
- Registration and processing fees. L’Alliance New York adds a $10 registration processing fee per class; Rice includes a $15 registration fee in its $530 price.
- Cancellation charges. The Alliance Française de Chicago keeps a 20% administrative fee (up to $50) on refunds before the first class; Instituto Cervantes Chicago keeps $50.
- Exam fees. Official certificates such as the DELE, DELF or JLPT are booked and paid for separately from the course: see how the DELE, DELF and Goethe-Zertifikat work.

How to keep the cost down
- For English, start with your school district’s adult school, the local community college’s noncredit ESL or your public library.
- Use your library card for free apps. Los Angeles Public Library offers Mango Languages and Transparent Language Online (110+ languages); Phoenix Public Library lists Rocket Languages and Rosetta Stone.
- Ask about returning-student and senior discounts: Rice takes $45 off for continuing students, and the Instituto Cervantes New York gives 10% off to over-65s.
- Take the free placement test that most institutes offer, so you do not pay for a level you have already covered.

Are English classes for adults free in the US?
Often, yes. LAUSD’s adult schools, NYC Department of Education adult education, City Colleges of Chicago, Los Angeles City College’s noncredit ESL and Rio Salado College in Phoenix all describe their adult English classes as free or tuition-free, though each has its own age and residency rules.
Is a private tutor cheaper than a class?
Online, sometimes: one marketplace puts most Spanish tutors at $4–$25 an hour. In person, tutors cost $30–$100+ an hour, against roughly $17–$31 an hour for a group course at a cultural institute. See tutoring vs group classes.
Do university extension courses give credit?
Some do. UCLA Extension’s Elementary Spanish carries 4 units. Rice University’s Foreign Language Program classes are non-credit.
Why is the same course cheaper in the afternoon?
Demand. Instituto Cervantes Chicago prices its 30-hour afternoon courses at $500 and its morning and evening courses at $590.
Do I need a certificate as well as a course?
Only if an employer, university or visa asks for one. For citizenship, the English test is part of the naturalisation interview: see the US naturalization English test.
