Language courses in Phoenix: free adult English, college ESL fees and French classes

Quick answer: Phoenix Public Library publishes a list of adult English (ESL) classes across the city: many are free, including Rio Salado College’s adult education, Friendly House and conversation circles at Phoenix College, while GateWay Community College charges $97 a course. For other languages, the Alliance Française of Greater Phoenix charges $300 for a six-week beginner French course and $600 for a 12-week class in person.

How public language classes work in Phoenix

Adult English in Phoenix is spread across the Maricopa Community Colleges, school districts and non-profits. Rio Salado College runs adult education for the Maricopa Community Colleges and says its English and high school equivalency classes are offered at no cost to students aged 16 or over who are not enrolled in high school, in person at community locations across Maricopa County and live online.

Phoenix Public Library’s English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA) class list, last updated in July 2025, is the most useful local source we found. It sets out cost and age limits for each provider:

Other languages: a sample of fees

The Alliance Française of Greater Phoenix runs three 12-week sessions a year (fall, winter and spring) and two 6-week summer sessions, with a free placement test. Its fall 2026 catalogue lists the complete-beginner A0 course, six weekly 2-hour classes, at $300; the A1.2 class, 12 weekly 2-hour classes, at $600 in person or $450 online. That is $25 an hour in person and under $19 online.

Free resources at the library

With a free Phoenix Public Library card you can use Rocket Languages and Rosetta Stone online, according to the library’s ESL class list, which puts no age limit on either. Branches also host English conversation classes; the Cholla Library class meets on Thursday evenings with no registration. For the federal funding behind free adult English, see our explainer on the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act.

Private lessons and schools: typical prices

We have not found a Phoenix-only price survey, so use the national ranges in our US language course costs guide. italki’s 2026 guide puts in-person tutors outside the most expensive metros at $20–$55 an hour and online marketplace tutors at $4–$25.

How to choose a language course in Phoenix

No US state licenses leisure language teachers, so compare providers on what they publish and what they will put in writing:

  • Level and outcome. Ask which CEFR level (or the provider’s own level) the course starts and finishes at, and how many teaching hours that takes. Our guide to CEFR levels from A1 to C2 explains the scale most institutes use.
  • Price per hour, not per course. Sessions in the sources below run from 4 to 12 weeks and from 1 to 3 hours a class, so divide the fee by the teaching hours before comparing.
  • What is extra. Books, registration fees and membership are often charged separately from tuition.
  • Eligibility for free classes. Publicly funded adult education usually has age, residency or documentation rules, so ask what to bring before you go.
  • Refunds and transfers. Ask for the refund policy in writing before you pay; most institutes only refund before the first or second class.
  • Documents. Several free Phoenix programmes ask for ID at registration, and some have income or eligibility rules, so check before your first visit.
