Free English classes in Cork

Cork City Libraries and Cork ETB publish a joint guide to English language learning for migrants. It says many of the English courses and supports it lists are provided by Cork ETB’s Further Education and Training Service and are free of charge. Cork College of FET runs adult and community education from a city-centre base on Paul Street and English and literacy support at the ABLES centre in The Glen, and the college’s other campuses advertise free English classes open to everyone.

University College Cork adds two options of its own. Its Language Centre runs free English lessons taught by supervised trainee teachers, about 36–40 hours of classes, and you apply by email at any time. The libraries’ guide also lists a UCC Language Centre scholarship of one year’s free tuition for asylum seekers and refugees living in the Cork area.

UCC evening courses in other languages

UCC’s School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures lists evening courses in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Fees are set by each department:

CourseFormatFee
French (Department of French)Online, 10 weeks x 1.5 hours, from 15 September 2026 and 12 January 2027€180 a term; €145 concession
Japanese Beginners 1 (Asian Studies)Online, Wednesdays 6.30–8.30pm, 10 weeks from 7 October 2026€200; €180 UCC staff and students
Certificate in Languages (ACE)NFQ Level 6, two languages, 20 credits€700 over one year, or €350 a year over two

The French department’s concession covers full-time UCC staff and students, pensioners and people on social welfare. Its courses are recreational, lead to no qualification and need at least 10 participants; if a class does not form, fees are refunded. Asian Studies said it could not run Korean evening classes or some Chinese and Japanese levels this autumn, so check what is running before you plan around it. The Certificate in Languages suits people who want a formal award: you study two languages, choosing from Chinese, French, Italian and others.

ETB night classes

Cork College of FET’s Morrison’s Island Campus lists languages among its Night College hobby courses, including conversational Spanish for beginners. We could not read the current fee from the campus website, so ask when you enrol. The college’s Tramore Road Campus notes that full-time further education courses carry no fee in 2026–27 beyond a €100 registration charge, but that does not apply to night classes.

Irish-language classes

We did not find a published in-person price for adult Irish classes in Cork city. Many Cork learners use online courses: Conradh na Gaeilge charges €150 for 10 weeks online and Gaelchultúr €220 for 20 hours. For certificates, see how the TEG Irish-language certificate works.

Free language help at the library

Cork City Libraries gives members free access to Transparent Language, with over 100 languages, on a computer or through the app, and to Universal Class online courses. The joint guide notes that it is free to join Cork City Libraries, and the library service publishes its own ESOL resources for English learners.

How to choose a language course in Cork

Language classes are not licensed like a trade, so compare providers on what they publish and what they will put in writing:

  • Level and hours. Ask which level the course starts and finishes at and how many teaching hours it includes. Most providers use the CEFR scale in our guide to CEFR levels A1 to C2.
  • Price per hour, not per course. The courses on this page run from 15 to 48 hours, so divide the fee by the teaching hours before you compare.
  • What is extra. Textbooks, membership, exam entry and payment charges are often added on top of tuition.
  • Accreditation. Ask whether the course leads to a QQI award, university credits, a certificate of attendance or nothing formal. For English schools recruiting students from abroad, ask whether the school holds the ACELS/QQI quality mark it claims and check it with QQI.
  • Minimum numbers and refunds. Several providers here only run a class if enough people enrol, and some fees are non-refundable once the course starts. Ask for the policy in writing.
  • Online or in person. Several UCC evening courses now run online only. If you want a classroom, check the format before you pay.
