How public language classes work in Calgary
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) runs adult and continuing education through Chinook Learning Services. Its language menu covers French, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Classroom courses include Beginner Spanish Level 1 and Spanish for Parents Level 1, the second aimed at parents of children in CBE French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual programmes. Chinook also sells instructor-moderated online language courses, which last six weeks with new sessions every month.
The University of Calgary offers French and Spanish through Continuing Education. Classroom courses usually meet on weekday evenings or Saturdays at the main or downtown campus, and most French and Spanish courses count towards a certificate. The Certificate in French Language and Culture (FSL Foundations) is a 140-hour, four-course programme; UCalgary estimates the total cost at $1,731, including a $105 admission fee.
For English, free LINC classes are open to eligible newcomers. In Calgary the first step is usually a language assessment, and the Calgary Language Assessment & Referral Centre (CLARC) run by Immigrant Services Calgary appears in public listings for that role. See how LINC and CLIC work.

The Alliance Française Calgary publishes its course schedule online: most general French courses are 24 hours, or 20 hours for small groups of five or six students, taught from the Inspire textbook series, in class in Marda Loop or online. How to choose a language course in Calgary
Leisure language classes are not licensed in the way a trade is, so compare providers on what they publish and what they will put in writing:
- Level and outcome. Ask which level the course starts and finishes at and how many teaching hours that takes. Government-funded English and French classes use the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and NCLC; most institutes use the CEFR scale explained in our guide to CEFR levels A1 to C2.
- Price per hour, not per course. The courses on this page run from 8 hours to 375 hours, so divide the fee by the teaching hours before comparing.
- What is extra. Registration fees, memberships, placement tests and textbooks are often charged on top of tuition.
- Eligibility for free classes. LINC and school board ESL classes have immigration-status and address rules, and most need a language assessment first. Ask what to bring before you go.
- Refunds and transfers. Ask for the refund policy in writing before you pay.
- Tests and certificates. If you need a result for immigration, check the course prepares for the exact test you will book: see language tests for Express Entry. For DELF and other certificates, see DELF, DELE and the Goethe-Zertifikat.
- Bring-a-friend offers. Chinook prices some classroom courses for two people; its online Spanish courses are excluded from discounts and seasonal promotions.
