Language courses in Manchester: MAES, university LEAP courses and ESOL

Quick answer: most courses at Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES), the council’s own provider, are free for Manchester residents aged 19+ who meet the rules, for example if you earn under £12.71 an hour or are unemployed on an income-based benefit. MAES concentrates on ESOL and community interpreting rather than leisure languages. For French, Spanish or German, the University of Manchester’s LEAP courses are open to the public, and the Alliance Française de Manchester prices beginner groups from £10 an hour.

Council adult education in Manchester

Manchester City Council runs its own adult education service, MAES, from centres across the city including Longsight, Abraham Moss in Crumpsall, Greenheys in Moss Side and Withington. MAES says the majority of its courses are free for Manchester residents aged 19 and over, and it assesses eligibility at an assessment and enrolment appointment. You are likely to qualify if you:

  • are employed and earn less than £12.71 an hour;
  • are unemployed and receive an income-based benefit; or
  • are studying for your first full level 2 or 3 on an eligible legal entitlement course.

Where a fee applies, it is shown on each course page and can be paid in instalments. MAES can also help learners on benefits or low incomes with bus tickets (if you live more than two miles from the centre), childcare for children under three, and DBS checks for placements.

In language terms, MAES’s current course areas are ESOL (its “Learn English and Progress” programme) and community interpreting. We did not find modern foreign language leisure courses in its current listings, so for those look to the universities, cultural institutes and private schools below.

University courses open to the public

The University of Manchester’s University Language Centre runs LEAP courses that are open to students, staff and members of the public aged 18 and above. Levels run from absolute beginner to C1. Its Spanish courses, for example, run for two semesters with three contact hours a week, and there is a one-semester Introduction to Spanish for beginners who want a shorter commitment. Some courses, including Russian and Polish, are taught online. Fees were not listed on the course pages we read, so ask for the public rate before you apply.

ESOL in Manchester

MAES is the council’s main ESOL provider, and its free-course criteria above apply. Nationally, ESOL up to level 2 is fully funded for learners who meet the earnings threshold; see free ESOL classes in England. If you are learning English for a visa or citizenship, check which level your route needs first.

Libraries and free resources

Manchester Libraries’ online reference library has a “Language Courses” entry that currently points to Duolingo, which is free. In 2019 the library service also promoted Transparent Language, an online package of more than 100 courses, to its members; it was not listed on the council page we checked in September 2026, so ask your library whether it is still available. Instituto Cervantes and the Alliance Française both run cultural programmes alongside their courses.

Private lessons and schools: typical prices

We have not found a reliable Manchester-only price survey for private tutors, so use the national ranges in our UK language course costs guide: private tutors average £14–£22 an hour on one tutoring marketplace (Findtutors) and £35–£50 in an agency guide (TutorCruncher). The Alliance Française’s group rate of £10–£12 an hour is a useful local benchmark if you are weighing a tutor against a group class.

How to choose a language course in Manchester

  • Level and outcome. Ask which CEFR level the course starts and finishes at, and how many teaching hours that takes. Our guide to CEFR levels from A1 to C2 explains what each level means.
  • Price per hour, not per course. Courses run for anything from 5 to 30 weeks and from 1 to 3 hours a class, so divide the fee by the teaching hours before comparing.
  • What is extra. Coursebooks, registration fees and exam fees are often charged separately.
  • Concessions and evidence. Publicly funded providers usually need proof of benefits, income or residency at enrolment, so ask what to bring.
  • Refunds and cancellation. Ask for the refund policy in writing. If you book online or by phone, you may have a 14-day cancellation right: see cancelling a language course.

At the Alliance Française, new students (or anyone who has not studied there for a year) take a quick level assessment before enrolling, and coursebooks are listed separately for each level. Ask other providers whether a placement test and books are included.
